San Blas

I´m writing this from Cartagena, we´re leaving tomorrow for panama. All the crew is on board, jody, Tara and Kway. The 6th one couldn´t make it, she broke her arm the day before she was going to fly in… Shit happens, we hope she´ll recover well and will be able to join us in the future. It doesn´t mean we have an extra bunk though, as we got chris coming back at the end of november with his girlfriend lauren and that will make 7 of us for the trip to haiti… next openings will be in february when we reach jamaica…

So we are ready to leave the city, and it is about time… we are getting a bit tired of the crowds, the noise the polution, and the weird atmosphere between the local skippers and the foreign ones… there is a big business going on around here with yachts as there is no road between panama and colombia, so skippers ferry, for a substantial fee, a stream of backpackers back and forth… unfortunatelly, where there is money there are tensions, and the past couple weeks the local skippers have attempted to intimidate all the foreign boats in order to corner the market… it is on the brink of becoming ugly and we want no part of that… we are ourselves in very good term with most of the colombians skippers, we even had a wonderfull evening with two of them the other night, playing music on karaka and exchanging stories, but then we are not doing charters so we are considered ok. the weird thing is that we are also very close to the other captains doing the trade, so we find ourselves a bit on an edge… but all is cool… the other reason it is time to leave is that we spent so much money while we were here… granted we did a lot of work on karaka, but still, money is going very fast… in the islands at least we don t go to the supermarket when we want some fruits or some meat…
so we should be out of touch for about 1 month, we´ll come back to colombia at the end of november, and then start to head north.
for those who want to join, write to us but keep in mind we wont have any bunks free untill several months. i just added a link page on the website, where you can find the contacts and websites of other crewing opportunities… also on kim´s blog there is a link to her flickr account with some nice pictures. i join a few of them here to give an idea of what kind of environment we are dwelling for this month of november…

Still in town, although we are almost ready to get on the raod again…
we´ve had a lot of work done on the boat in the past weeks, including painting and varnishing inside, the haul out of course, a total rebuilding of the dinghy, and countless other stuff…

now we´re having the first crew arriving, jody yesterday, tara tonight and verena tomorow night, and then kway will arrive next monday.
when everybody is on board and we have resupllied, food and fuel, we´ll head for san blas tpo try to spend kim´s birthday in a nice place. she´s turning 22 on the second of november…

we´ll stay in san blas for a little less than a month, drop verena in panama and then come back to cartagena, pick up chris and lauren to sail north to haiti…

painting is done, all the other little jobs we needed to do out of the water are done too, we’re scheduled to get back in the water tomorrow wednesday at 10.

Kim has been overhauling the interior of karaka, painting and varnishing, the boat will look different.

i also organized with some workers to rebuilt the dinghy… i’m assured it will look like new in 3 days… that won’t be a luxury, it is barely floating as it is…

Also check the link on the right saying 2005 – 2009, that the whole log, adventures and all since borneo, all in one go, in chronological order…
