Cuba

Posted in Uncategorized on 20/02/2010 by ketchkaraka

We are now ready to head to cuba.

We spend the last week in a little harbor called oracabessa, where we just chilled, worked on getting the boat ready and let the bad weather blow over. Now we are in ocho rios, a port of entry, for the last shopping and the last preparations for sailing out of jamaica. We did the check out this morning and we will sail tomorow morning first thing. we are going to the archipelago of the jardines de la reina, in the south of cuba, where we’ll cruise for a couple weeks before going to the city of cienfuegos.
we are going to spend the next several weeks in cuba.

well, first I need to confirm one thing, this custom officer is not the friendliest… I have been waiting all day for him to show up to give me back the paper he took from me the other day… i don’t want to make hasty generalization but wearing an uniform really does something to people…

anyway, we are about ready to head for Oracabessa tomorow. we will spend a few days there before sailing to the town of ocho rios to check out of jamaica and get our last supplies before cuba.

Kim is leaving tonight, getting a ride with a friend to montego bay where she will catch her plane for her long flight back to Oz. she’ll fly back this way and meet us in cuba around the end of march…

so Nine miles and Bob’s Place was cool, if a bit chilly… we met several couchsurfers lately, since kim has posted on that website that we are around. a german guy called hans even spent the night on the boat last night. we also met a traveler called marcia on the bus back from the mountain and she ended up staying on karaka for the night as well. she has a bit of time and will be sailing with us to oracabessa before flying home to california in a few days…

The crew for cuba will thus be 5, with Kway, Tara, Rick, Elan and me. we won’t take more crew for now, maybe one more sometime in march but it is not sure, we’ll see how it goes. kim will be writing back to all you guy who contacted us lately. sorry for the delay but it has been pretty hectic and we didn’t have the time to answer the loads of mails we received. there will be crew positions available late april when most of the current crew has to go back wherever they have to go back to.

Yeah, mon!

still in port antonio jamaica after all this time… there has been a lot happening and so we ended up staying here in the marina, well anchored out but they still charge for that, and sorting out everything…

so kim is flying to australia on tuesday, she is going home to visit family anf friends for about 6 weeks, and so will be back on board sometime at the end of march…

we have two new crew members, rick and elan. chris, lauren and jody left us, although jody is still in jamaica, traveling around.

this week end we are all going to nine miles, bob marley’s birthplace for a big reggae festival.

today tara’s dad is arriving form the states, coming to visit tara for a week. he brings me my new accordeon…

as i was writing this on the computer in the marina office, the custom officer came to talk to me asking me for more paperwork… we had checked out of por antonio last tuesday, getting a cruising permit to sail to ocho rios, another port about 50 miles away along the coast, still in jamaica. you need to tell them exactly where you are and what is happening, it is a bit weird. but we didn’t leave as expected, so now the guy busted me and want his cruising permit back, (it took me a whole day to get it) so he can cancel it and issue a new one whenever we want to go … all that to stay in jamaica… i can’t stand absurd bureaucracy… the worst part is that they act surprised i don’t understand their stupid rules, as if it was just normal to come up with things like that. well it isn’t… anyway, sorry for the rant…

so after we have done our paperwork somtime monday, we’ll let kim take off for the airport in montego bay and we’ll sail to a little bay called oracabessa, where we’ll just chill out for a while until tara meet up with us after her dad leaves and then we’ll head for the town of ocho rios, fill up fuel and water and groceries and all that, check out jamaica, and sail to the islands in the jardines de la reina, teh cuba archipelago in the south of the country. we plan on spending a cuple weeks or more just beachcombing, diving, fishing and tackling projects on the boat…
after that cienfuegos, and the rest of the country but nothing definite yet, we’ll just need to be somehwere accessible for kim to meet up with us…

ok i have to run, i have a custom officer fuming behind my back and he want my obsolete cruising permit… i need to make a run back to the boat…
