A not so pretty hull. I scaled the rusty spots all around, hard work, and found a couple bad surprises… the worst one is the deck over hang, which serves as docking protection and luckily is not structural, that is rusted through on a fairly big portion… i’ll need to cut a piece about 10 cm by 4 meters and reweld… big job. I might need to hire somebody to do that, as it is an overhead weld and i’m not sure i can handle it… i’ll try though…

You can see how it looks on this photo. I banged on it with a hammer and that’s why it looks ragged, but what happened is that water made its way inside and rust ate through the metal over the years, it probably never was painted in there. From outside it looked okay but when i tried to remove small rust scale, i found that the metal left was paper thin, with many holes… so off it goes… to explain a bit, this ragged hole doesn’t lead into the boat, only inside a small compartment formed by the deck on the top, the hull on the back side, and the rusty piece on the under side… so it is not a disaster, the integrity of the hull is not compromised at all.

Otherwise i also found a hole through the hull out of the chain locker, but that was expected, since the chain locker looks like this :

But that will be easier to take care off…
Making progress though, doing good. It is very nice to have kim back and not be on my own anymore…
Two others are on their way, driving down from the states as well, and then my parents will fly in on the 8 th of may… so we should have plenty of help for the final sprint, the Big Painting.

And also , beside all this, we found some time to play some music together with kim, her on her violin and me on my new concertina, which is real great. And as a threat, here is the sunset in front of me as i write this…

Engine room

Posted in Uncategorized on 24/04/2012 by ketchkaraka

So, I have been working on the engine room floor. Alex and frank came to help me move the genset from where it sits usually on the floor ,up on the workbench, to clear the floor for cleaning and painting.

image

image

After that i got into the rust on the floor, which was really bad and thick, and also covered with some greasy gunk that was very hard to remove.

image

It took me a few days with the needle scaler, the wire brush, soap and water, acid, etc etc.

image

But i finally got it under control, and this morning i applied the first coat of primer.

You can see the difference…

Otherwise, during those last few days i also spent quite a bit of time recovering from a serious hang over, rode the bike all over town several times trying to locates parts for the underwater window i’m building, had to fix the bike that is falling appart, cleaned up the boat to make it nicer for kim when she arrives, and finally while my primer was drying in the engine room, i started scaling rust on the outside of the hull… been busy…

Die, rust die

Posted in Uncategorized on 16/04/2012 by ketchkaraka

The water tank is almost ready to be closed again, i guess i’ll put one more coat of paint in itm since i have the paint and it is no use for anywhere else, and then i’ll just need some sikaflex to seal the lid and patches, and then i’m done with that!

image

Otherwise i have also been working on the rust in the engine room. I started with the port side, the side of the work bench. It was pretty bad because of a run off from the aft toilet, there was always some salt water leaking around, but fortunately the rust was not very deep and the metal is still good, i did not poke any holes… i’m glad, tha was one part of the hull i was really worried about… good old karaka is stronger that i credit her for… so i delt with the rust yesterday, then applied a first coat of primer, then the second one this afternoon and it is starting to look good.

Tomorrow i will apply a couple coats of polyurethane finish paint on that wall, before removing the genset and putting it on the workbench, so as to get access to the whole floor… then back to rust banging again… making progress…

water tank antics

Posted in Uncategorized on 15/04/2012 by ketchkaraka

yep still working on that water tank… it is a pretty big one though, that’s why it is taking me time.
after spending a few days looking for supplies, running around i town trying to find steel, bolts, paint and such, i have now shaped and positioned all the various patches that will plug the various holes i poked into the tank while cleaning the rust. the lid for the trap  is done too.
then today i got my courage amped up, and dove into that tank with my needle scaler… that was a hell of a job, but i got most of the rust out. the tank is big, but barely big enough for me to fit in,¬† so i can climb in there, but once in, i can’t turn or move around… so i have to plan my angle before i get down, so as to be able to use the tools… tricky and it is good i am not claustrophobic. so i got the rust back to bare steel, only a few patches were actually rusty, and it wasn’t very deep. after that it took me a while to get all the dust and flakes off the very tight bottom of the tank. the tank itself is the hull, and go all the way down into the keel, so in order to reach the bottom of the tank i had to go head first, clutching my vaccum cleaner nozzle as i was going …
after that i sanded the whole tank, using a palm sander. same thing, it was a real pleasure, with theee added treat of dust flying everywhere… after that came the time to clean, which i did using a sponge tied to a stick and a lot of water. and finally i converted the rust with acid. doesn’t sound like much but it took me all day…

image

now i’m going to let it dry overnight, and tomorrow first thing i’ll paint. i bought some non toxic water based metal paint, which i hope will be of good quality enough to last a while. i can’t use solvent based paint for the water tank, not only because painting in there would be lethal, but also to make sure no harmful chemicals leach into the water later on…

otherwise this evening, having an hour to kill, i did some work on the rigging, some minors repairs i had on the list…
now i’m done, time for a guacamole and a beer in the sunset…
